Swedish Crypto Exchanges 2026 - MiCA & Finansinspektionen
Safello, Goobit/BTCX, Trijo and Klarna — who is the largest, who is waiting for a MiCA licence, who is on the Finansinspektionen Warning List 2026
Q1 2026 update on the regulated Swedish crypto exchange market: Safello (425,400+ users, only one with a MiCA licence) revenue −28% YoY; Goobit/BTCX (since 2011) waiting on a MiCA decision; Trijo remains a pre-MiCA VASP; Klarna is going the stablecoin-issuer route.
Brief Summary
Sweden's cryptocurrency exchange market in the first half of 2026 is markedly stratified — one player (Safello) has already received a MiCA licence and is publicly listed on Nasdaq First North, another (Goobit/BTCX) is still awaiting a decision, whilst a third (Trijo) and a player not directly focused on cryptocurrencies (Klarna) are pursuing different paths. Finansinspektionen has issued at least 4 public warnings this year about suspicious or fraudulent cryptocurrency companies. Alongside this, Bitcoin ETP products available through Nasdaq Stockholm and Nordea have become an alternative for Swedish investors.
Who is the largest Swedish cryptocurrency player?
Safello — the largest cryptocurrency exchange in Sweden and all of the Nordic region by user count. In the first quarter of 2026, it reported more than 425,400 active users. The company is publicly listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market (SFL.ST) — meaning its finances are transparent and published in quarterly reports.
MiCA status: Full MiCA CASP licence received from Finansinspektionen on 13 October 2025. It is currently the only Swedish exchange with a full MiCA licence.
Key events this year: On 3 February 2026, Safello opened operations in Finland — the first cross-border expansion using the EU passport mechanism. On 2 March 2026, co-founder Frank Schuil returned to the position of Chief Executive Officer.
Q1 2026 — How is the business performing?
Safello's first quarter results reflect the impact of macroeconomic factors on the entire cryptocurrency exchange industry:
| Metric | Q1 2026 | YoY Change |
|---|---|---|
| Net turnover | 140.5 million SEK (~12.5 million EUR) | −28% |
| Gross profit | 6.0 million SEK | −32% |
| Net result | −3.3 million SEK | Loss |
Reasons: lower order volumes (cryptocurrency price declines reduce commission revenues, which are substantial in cryptocurrency), as well as higher compliance costs following the implementation of MiCA, DORA and other new regulations.
This well illustrates a broader trend — even the most successful EU cryptocurrency exchanges experience cost increases in the first year following MiCA implementation, whilst their competitive advantages (regulator-approved brand) are only just beginning to pay off.
Other Swedish players — what is their status?
Goobit / BTCX — contender for the second MiCA licence
Goobit Group AB (publicly listed) trading under the brand BTCX was founded in 2011 and publicly claims to be the world's oldest still-operating Bitcoin exchange. Its MiCA licence application has been submitted to Finansinspektionen and is currently under review.
Until a decision is received, Goobit operates under the MiCA Article 143 transitional provisions. Goobit publicly highlights an interesting achievement — it is the first Swedish company to implement MiCA-compliant ESG information disclosure.
Our assessment: if the MiCA licence is granted in the second half of 2026, Sweden will gain a second fully regulated CASP in the region. Large-scale shifts in customer flows from Safello to BTCX or vice versa are not expected in the short term — both players serve different segments (Safello: institutional private investors, BTCX: Bitcoin-oriented clients).
Trijo — pre-MiCA, broadest token range
Trijo is another Swedish player operating as a full exchange with an order book and publicly claims to have the broadest range of cryptocurrencies amongst Swedish competitors. It does not publicly disclose its MiCA application status.
In our CASP registry, Trijo is classified as a pre-MiCA VASP — meaning it operates within the transition period until 1 July 2026. After this date, it will need either a full MiCA licence or cease operations on the Swedish market.
Klarna — not an exchange, but with its own plans
Klarna (Sweden's fintech giant) is not a classic cryptocurrency exchange. Chief Executive Officer Sebastians Siemiatkovskis has announced KlarnaUSD stablecoin plans during 2026, with a public launch expected in 2026. This means Klarna is choosing the stablecoin issuer direction rather than that of an exchange. In our registry, it is maintained as an informational entry with licenseType: "other".
Comparison table — which Swedish exchange for which user?
| Exchange | MiCA Status | Main Strength | Suitable For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safello | ✅ Full licence (2025-10-13) | Largest, regulated, publicly listed | Beginners with security as a priority, private users with SEK/EUR |
| Goobit / BTCX | ⏳ Application under review | World's oldest Bitcoin exchange since 2011 | Pure Bitcoin enthusiasts with trust in the historic brand |
| Trijo | ⚠️ Pre-MiCA VASP | Broadest token range, order book | Active traders wanting access to smaller tokens |
| Klarna | — (not an exchange) | Stablecoin issuer plans | Not an alternative — awaiting KlarnaUSD launch |
Alternatives for Swedish users using the EU passport mechanism (all MiCA-licenced):
- Coinmotion (FI) — open to Swedish clients using BankID
- Northcrypto (FI) — focus on retail
- Bitstamp (LU) — global tradition
- Coinbase EU (LU) — US parent company
- Kraken (IE) — available in 30 EEA countries
- Bitvavo (NL) — low commission fees, EUR-focused
Finansinspektionen Warning List 2026
Sweden's regulator publishes an official Investor Alerts list of companies offering financial services to Swedish users without proper authorisation. In 2026, this list includes the following warnings relating to cryptocurrency structures:
- Rik Flowbit — unauthorised service provider
- NorthCrypto Oy (clone) / Första Norr — fraudulent company impersonating Finland's Northcrypto. This is NOT the real Northcrypto — before depositing funds, carefully verify the domain and account details.
- Ström Bitnova — unauthorised
- The CF Global Trading (clone) — fake broker sending offers to Swedish investors
Practical tip: before making a deposit to any online crypto service, check it in the official Finansinspektionen register and FI Warning List. If a company sends unsolicited offers via email, WhatsApp or phone — it's almost certainly a scam.
New alternatives — Bitcoin ETP on the Swedish market
Alongside MiCA-regulated exchanges, 2026 has brought regulated Bitcoin and crypto ETPs to Swedish retail users via traditional investment accounts (ISK):
- Nasdaq Stockholm (14 January 2026) — Bitwise listed 7 crypto ETPs denominated in SEK.
- Nordea (December 2025) — Bitcoin ETP from CoinShares is available to Nordea clients.
- Available through Avanza and Nordnet ISK accounts.
This development is significant because it offers regulated exposure to cryptocurrencies without direct crypto custody status. It's well suited to Swedish users wanting Bitcoin exposure through a traditional broker, simplifying tax reporting (ISK scheme).
Summary and our assessment
Stability: Sweden's regulated cryptocurrency exchange sector is stable in 2026, but competition is growing. After 1 July, several exchanges worldwide will lose the ability to serve Swedish clients (those not receiving MiCA licences). This will effectively concentrate the market among a few large, regulated players.
Most popular: Safello with over 425,400 users and public company transparency.
Growth: Q1 2026 reflects the impact of short-term price declines (Safello turnover −28% year-on-year), but this reflects the broader cryptocurrency market cycle, not a Sweden-specific issue.
Black list: In 2026, Finansinspektionen has published 4 warnings, one of which (NorthCrypto clone) impersonates the Finnish Northcrypto in our register — verify the domain carefully.
New exchanges: Apart from Safello, no other public, MiCA-licensed new Swedish exchange has been established in 2026. Goobit is the closest candidate for a second licence.
VASP → MiCA transition:
- ✅ Granted full MiCA licence: Safello (1)
- ⏳ Application submitted, decision pending: Goobit/BTCX (1)
- ⚠️ Pre-MiCA VASP, unclear status: Trijo (1)
- — No exchange, but with transition plans: Klarna (1)
Practical recommendations for Swedish users in 2026
- Want a MiCA-regulated exchange with SEK support? Safello is the best local choice.
- Want a broader token range or lower fees? Consider Coinmotion or Bitvavo (EUR focus, EU passport).
- Passive investor with a traditional investment account? Bitcoin ETP via Avanza, Nordnet or Nordea — without direct cryptocurrency holding.
- Before depositing: Check if the exchange is in the Finansinspektionen register and is NOT on the FI Warning List.
