Crypto Exchanges 14.07: Goobit Weighs MiCA Appeal
Tuesday, 14 July: Goobit/BTCX announced on 13 July that appealing the MiCA rejection is the most likely path, but the exchange continues to operate. This week, Norway's K33 enters Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Germany with a MiCA passport. Bitcoin around $62,550.
In the Baltic and Nordic CASP segment, the main event of the past 24 hours is the official announcement from Goobit Group AB (BTCX) on 13 July: the company states that appealing the Swedish Finansinspektionen's MiCA rejection is the most likely path in the near future, but BTCX operations will continue throughout the process. The initial rejection (early July, internal control and AML deficiencies) was covered on 2 July; the 13 July announcement marks a new step. In the context of this week (around 10 July), Norway's K33 is expanding into Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Germany with a MiCA passport. Watchlist: ESMA CASP register ~230-244 licences, Tangem hardware wallet security study (separate 13.07), Bitcoin around $62,550.
In the last 24 hours, there has been one clearly dated new event in the Baltic and Nordic crypto exchange and CASP segment, making today's release a "slim" daily overview: the main event is Goobit/BTCX's 13 July announcement regarding the MiCA rejection appeal, supplemented by this week's Tier B context (K33 expansion) and an updated watchlist. Dates for each event are specified in the sentence; older, ongoing processes are labelled as context, not fresh news.
Goobit/BTCX Weighs MiCA Rejection Appeal (13 July)
On 13 July at 09:55 CET, Goobit Group AB, listed on the Swedish stock exchange (which operates the crypto exchange BTCX), published an official statement regarding the Swedish Finansinspektionen's decision to reject its MiCA CASP application. The company states that it is still analysing the decision and that an appeal ("överklagande") is the "most likely path" in the near future. At the same time, management emphasises that BTCX continues to operate as usual throughout the process and that customer services are not being interrupted.
The initial rejection came into effect at the beginning of July - NorriWire reported on this in its 2 July release. At the time, the Finansinspektionen cited deficiencies in internal control and compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) requirements as the reason; on the day the news broke, Goobit's share price fell by approximately 46%. The 13 July announcement is a new, separately dated step: for the first time, the company publicly indicates that an appeal is the most likely scenario, rather than just one of the options being evaluated.
Practical implications for the market: until the appeal process is concluded, BTCX's status remains uncertain. During the Swedish administrative process, the exchange can continue to operate on its existing basis, but a final decision on the MiCA licence has not yet been made. Customers and partners are advised to follow the company's future announcements, as these will determine whether BTCX retains access to the EU single market in the long term.
So Far This Week: K33 Expands in the Nordics and Germany (10 July)
Around 10 July, Norwegian crypto company K33, which received MiCA authorisation from the Norwegian Finanstilsynet, announced the first step in active European expansion using the MiCA "passport" (passporting). The K33 platform is opening in four new markets - Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Germany. The company's CEO, Torbjørn Bull Jenssen, stated that "from the very beginning, our goal has been to build a European, not just a Norwegian, platform," and that these four markets are the starting point on the way to the entire European Economic Area.
The event is significant as it practically demonstrates the MiCA passport mechanism in action: a CASP authorisation issued in one EEA country allows services to be provided in other member states without a separate local licence. For the Nordic segment, this means increased competition - a regional player with Norwegian authorisation directly competes with markets where both local and international CASPs operate.
Context and Watchlist (for reminder, not fresh news)
MiCA CASP Register. According to publicly available data, at the end of June, the ESMA CASP register contained approximately 230-244 authorised service providers across the EU, with Germany and France leading the way. Baltic and Nordic jurisdictions continue to accept and review applications; the numbers change week by week, so we consider them background, not yesterday's news.
Hardware Wallet Security. On 13 July, Ledger's security laboratory (Donjon) published a study on the risk of physical (laser) attacks on Tangem card-type wallets. NorriWire covered this topic in a separate article on 13 July, so we mention it here only as a watchlist reference, not as a new event.
Market Background. On 13 July, Bitcoin traded around the $62,550 level, where technical analysts pointed to a "double top" formation and a shift in ETF flows. This is general context, not a regional segment event.
Summary for Market Participants
-
Firstly, customers of BTCX and other Sweden-based service providers are advised to follow Goobit's future announcements - the outcome of the appeal will determine the exchange's long-term access to the EU market.
-
Secondly, K33's entry into Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Germany confirms that the MiCA passport is becoming a key instrument for regional competition; local players must contend with new competitors entering without a separate local licence.
-
Thirdly, for companies still preparing MiCA applications, the Goobit case is a reminder that deficiencies in internal control and AML requirements are a common reason for rejection - these must be addressed before submitting an application.
-
Fourthly, hardware wallet users should follow the Ledger Donjon study on Tangem card risks (see the separate 13 July article) when evaluating physical security assumptions.
